Moda's Open House

Recently I ventured down to Dallas for Moda’s annual open house.  Mark Dunn, president of the company, is someone I greatly admire for his ability to look into the future of sewing.  He is gifted at detecting trends and leading shops toward success, if they are willing to take his advice.  There were two things Mr. Dunn said that I thought you would be interested in, the first is that sewing is broadening into things other than quilting such as home decor and fashion sewing.  Some of you are already turning red saying out loud to your computer screen “I will never make another garment and refuse to believe quilting is dead!”.  Relax, that is not what I wrote, I used the word broadening, not ending quilting but spreading into other areas too.  I am excited about this, especially for the new sewist that may be intimidated to make a quilt but might start with something smaller.  As for the garment sewing, that was on my personal goal list for 2014, I wanted to make a few pieces clothing.  I am in the process of that right now, using the Serendipity Studio Willow pattern.  It was fun to try a garment project and I am sure I will do more of her attractive designs.

Have you recently made a table runner, wall hanging, pot holder, tea towel, pillow, or garment?  I would like to know.

The second point he made that I thought extremely interesting was that precuts constituted 1/3 of all Moda’s fabric sales.

Again this shows Mr. Dunn’s intuitive skills, by introducing the jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cakes and hexagon packs just to name a few, he has created an industry within an industry.  Folks love precuts if they have a hard time using a rotary cutter or do not want to take the time to cut their pieces before beginning the process of sewing.  If they do not have confidence in choosing colors, they know all the fabric will complement each other.  They can get a huge variety of prints without a huge expense.  But I believe the number reason is that it is so much faster than going home and cutting out a project. There are many books and patterns calling for precuts now so it is easier than ever to really and truly make a quilt top in a day.  Giving Eleanor Burns all the credit for the creation of that line.

Moda’s marketing department showed a super idea about how to show off those beautiful jelly rolls, charms, and layer cakes.  We have implemented this in our store with an attractive shelving system.  Instead of the precuts spread all over the shop they are in one central place making it even easier to see what is new in sewing.

I would love to know if you have used precuts and what you think about them.  If you haven’t used them, why not?

If you want to earn more ideas and techniques about quilting, you need to make sure that you are learning from the best! Ever since, it has always been a desire for me to enroll myself in one of the class that you conduct. Quilting might not be my passion during my younger years, but I became interested to know it even more while growing old! Perhaps, when you have nothing to do but enjoy life, you find other ways on how to have fun!
