Mourning for Maya Angelou

Marguerite Ann Johnson, known as Maya Angelou, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014, I mourn her loss.  Along with a million other people, Maya touched my soul through her poetry and writings.  Although most of my books go to the public library  once I have read them, her books remain with me as though they are part of me.  They represent a small part of my life that is real and true, a part I will not give up. I still remember reading I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and being so moved from it that I felt my life change before me.  As a sage elder who seemed to know what I was going through and had the wisdom to guide me through it, she lovingly guided me from thinking I was alone without anyone understanding my life.  Maya understood, at least for me I felt I was no longer alone but had a beacon to guide me.

When I say I mourn her I want you to be sure what that means to me.  When someone close to me dies, I do cry for the loss but at the very same time I am saying a prayer of gratitude for letting that person’s soul touch mine.  I am grateful that I found her writings, especially her poetry, while I was still so very young and impressionable.  I am a better person for knowing her work and letting her words guide me in my life’s path.  Good bye dear lady, thanks for leaving so much of yourself behind on the written page. May young women and men all over the earth continue to read your works throughout eternity.
