At the Hop

You can rock it you can roll it, Do the stomp and event stroll it, At the Hop

Dick Clark first introduced the song Do the Hop on American Bandstand in the 1950’s

You probably have not attended a sock hop for many decades but if you are like me, the song makes me not only smile but wiggle a little too.  The Shop Hops that quilters now attended don’t involve dancing but they do still involve fun going from one shop to another to see their unique personalities and offerings.   Shop Hops are not all alike, with different prizes, rules, dates and participating shops.  Prairie Quilt is involved in two Shop Hops each year, a small one April 4th and, 5th consisting of six shops and a statewide one lasting May 31 – June 30 consisting of 24 shops.  Below is a rundown of both of these Hops, we hope to see you at one or both of them

Sew Oklahoma Shop Hop is held April 4th & 5th from 9 am – 5 pm.

In both of the Hops we are involved in there is a paper that is stamped by each shop called a passport.  This paper passport is something that is used to verify the person going to each shop has indeed been there.  In the Sew Oklahoma Shop Hop the Hopper would pay a onetime fee of $5.00 for their Passport to the first shop they stop at.  Each shop puts their individual stamp on the Passport.

With their passport purchased, they are entitled to a free block pattern and enough fabric to make that particular block, a total of six free fabric kits with patterns will be given out when the Hopper visits all six shops.  Each shop will also have an additional block that you may purchase if you wish at $5, making 12 blocks available.  This year’s quilt is a colorful batik applique flower quilt.  Most shops have a “finishing kit” that is optional to purchase to finish off your blocks.  The Sew Oklahoma Shop Hop does not have a website but they do have a Facebook Page.  At the moment we don’t have any finished blocks or quilts but you should start seeing some within the next week or two.

The Hopper is also entitled to a 25% discount on one cut of fabric from each store.  At our shop we sell a lot of extra wide backings because of our large variety available, 25% off backings is a very nice savings.

When the participant has gone to all of the six shops they turn in their completed passport at the last shop, it will be entered into a drawing for a $50 and a $100 gift certificate from each store, totalling $900 of gift certificates that will be awarded.  On the following Monday after the Hop all the shop owners get together and draw from the stamped passports.

Road to Oklahoma Shop Hop is held May 31 – June 30, hours vary according to the areas of the State so check the passport for times.  The passport does not cost anything, it can be picked up from any participating shop or downloaded from the Hop website.  Each participant will receive a free pattern at each store and has the option to purchase the fabric kit for $5.00 each.  The fabric used this year is ombre colors with a black background, these are beautiful fabrics and will really please and even surprise the participants at what you can do with this type of unusual fabric.   Most shops have a “finishing kit” that is optional to purchase to finish off your blocks.

There are over $4,000 of prizes given away at this Hop, in additional to individual shops offering prizes so the actual dollar value of prizes are close to $6,000 in total.  You do not have to visit all the shops to be eligible for many of the prizes.  On the following Monday after the Hop all the shop owners get together and draw from the stamped passports.  Road to Oklahoma also has a Facebook page in addition to their website.
